Rainy Day and Shed Plans

Its been a busy week for me and yesterday was one of those rainy days that gave me a chance to take a break.  I thought I'd share a little of what I've been doing.  I set up my yellow bistro chairs outside.
Among my new plants for the garden and pots is this tower of annuals that actually survived a frost watch that I forgot about.  That little blue tile in the top pot was dug up in the yard several years ago and I found it so pretty and interesting that I always put it in a pot.

The shed is on my "to-do" list this year.  When we first moved in it was unpainted and looked awful.  I got the generic off-the-shelf red barn stain and we painted the trim white.  Its overdue for a good cleaning and another paint job.  I used to love the rustic quality of the red, but somehow it bothers me now.  I feel like it stands out a little more than I want it to.  I want it to look a little more pretty and a little less rustic.

Initially, I thought of painting it the same creamy pale yellow of our house, but then I thought of the dirt factor on such a light color.  There's a little metal sign hanging over the door and it made me think - What about blue?

Maybe like this?

Then, I found this ...
I really love how the colors blend in to the garden around it but then there's the red.  I happen to have some old windows that I was hoping to use and I think they're going to get a red paint job.  I probably won't install them to be functional because space is so limited that I can't spare the wall space for windows but I was thinking of just putting them on the shed decoratively to make it look a little more interesting.
Today promises to be another beautiful day and for now I've got weeding to do.

  1. The yellow chairs look fabulous. Oh how I wish I had room for a nice big shed like that. I would love it. I think the soft blue or a green would be gorgeous for it. Can't wait to see what you do. Hugs, Marty

  3. Your yard looks very pretty! How great that you have plants available in your area. A bit too soon for us. I'm glad I can look at your pretty photos and dream.

I like both your inspiration photos. I'm really drawn to the blue, with a grey undertone. The splash of red would work too. I also like your little sitting areas and plant pots. Thanks for sharing and I am looking forward to seeing your shed reveal.

  6. Those are cute pot towers you have made. I'll have to keep that in mind for our garden.

Is your house white? I can't remember but I think it is based on the title of your blog. I would make your shed the blue shade then, rather than the neutrals that might look a bit muddy with the pure white of the house. Have you thought about putting mirror behind your faux-windows. They would reflect the garden back at you then. Your garden is looking so pretty.

  7. Grace, My house is actually yellow and not a cottage but a boring 1960s house. ;-) The title of my blog is my dream house.

I thought about the mirror, but its actually incredibly hard to get custom mirrors and more money than I want to spend. Also, considering how they will be mounted on the windows, I thought dirt might be a problem.

  9. I used that same tower of pots for my herb garden this year and so far I love it! At first I was hesitant (as if that matters...ha!) about your decision to change the shed--I like the barn look, but that last shed with the pop of red and the neutral colors is gorgeous. I think it will look fabulous.
