Playroom finished!

The finished product ...

This isn't really a playroom since we don't have a big enough house for that, but its a dedicated play "space". I've been working on bits and pieces of this for months. I kept doing parts of it but never finished it. Its finally DONE! The mirror that's hanging here was in our half-bath but it wasn't going to work there once we install the new sink so I painted it white and put it here.

Below is what I started with. There were toys all over the place. It stressed me out to see this! We also bought a new TV so the old one was there until we finally moved it. I had redone all the shelves we had a while ago except for the one on the left. I did that one yesterday. Our house isn't huge and the only way to keep it from looking like the disaster below is to organize everything so that's what I've been working on.

I got additional shelving and bins for toys which the girls love because they can reach everything. I love it because now there is a place for all of it and they can clean it all up when they're done.

I moved the corner cabinet to the other side of the basement and it holds quite a few photo albums...

I also painted the sewing table.

I got more photo storage bins and painted some that I already had white to match. I also used some of the bins that I didn't use for my craft closet. All our photos used to be stored in what is now the craft closet so I moved them to the new shelving and there is a lot more space for them now. (That old radio has been all over the house. Someone gave it to Mr. T and I think it may actually still work!)

Lastly, Mr. T attached the last of the chicken wire doors.

There are quite a few things more I'd like to do in our basement including adding the vintage fireplace mantle. I also tried to remove the safety gate around the fireplace, but that was a massive FAIL. It seems so much more spaceous without it there, but the girls like to climb on it and launch themselves off the ledge. Not safe. I guess I'll have to wait a little longer to remove it.

This is a big project but I'm glad to at least have the toy/photo organization part behind me!

Last but not least, someone in a previous post asked me in the comments what the wall color was. The wainscotting is Beach White and the walls are Desert Camel. Both are by Behr. Funny thing ... I remember being 30-something weeks pregnant and painting those walls. I could only paint a little at a time before having to lie on the floor and take a break. The following week, I was put on bedrest. I guess I was overdoing it. Oops! Funny thing is, I want to repaint a lighter color. At least now I'm not pregnant!

Go take a look at the other projects on DIY Day at A Soft Place to Land!

  12. I LOVE the chicken wire doors. So cute!! :) You did a great job. I can appreciate this b/c I have two little girls, ages 3 and 19 m. I wonder if you got some of that padding like they use on coffee table edges for your fireplace ledge? It would soften the edges so they wouldn't get cut on it...Visiting from Kimba's party. :)

  23. I love the chicken wire doors - I have a client that has swapped glass out of varying cabinets in her house, and replaced with different styles of chicken wire- it is so unique and interesting... I love those pull out bins too - they come in way cool sizes/shapes/colors/textures ... I don't need anymore but still find myself wanting to buy them, because they are so functional. Great play space!
