Weekend Milk Glass Finds

By now I'm sure its clear that I have a weakness for milk glass. Over the weekend, I saw the bowl on the left in a thrift store and brought it home. I've had its smaller cousin on the right for a while.

I also picked up the candlesticks below in the same shop I mentioned Sunday. I've seen these before in several stores and always pass them up but I decided to just go for it and I'm glad I did. I like the way they look against the dark wood of the table.

I keep my milk glass in my great-grandmother's secretary that resides in the dining room. Its getting really crowded in there!

I try to just stick with buying hobnail or lace-edge pieces now, but sometimes I fail. Its an illness.

New Faucet

A while back I posted the Master Bath renovation that Mr. T and I did a few years ago. When we did that renovation, we chose bronze fixtures for our sink and shower. Genuine bronze fixtures are beautiful with their living finish, but out of the range of my budget at the time considering the fact that the renovation was unplanned so I chose the typical faux finishes available at the usual hardware stores. Big mistake. In a matter of weeks after installing them, the finish was ruined. I don't use abrasive cleaners but the finish on these fixtures couldn't even handle even a single pin-sized drop of hand soap or a drip of toothpaste on them without the clear coat flaking off. This meant that the fixtures constantly looked dirty. I developed an intense hatred for them, but replacement wasn't high on the priority list since they were brand new.

A few weeks ago, we finally replaced it with good old fashioned, durable chrome.

I searched everywhere for something with porcelain knobs and the pickings were slim. During my search I even heard another shopper asking an employee for a faucet with the same porcelain knobs. I thought to myself, "Good luck dude." The selection for anything chrome was limited. These days brushed nickel and bronze are "in" so poor classic chrome is the step-sister not invited to the party. Despite wishing I could have had a better selection, I'm far happier with my shiny chrome fixtures than the peeling ugly bronze mess I had before. Just check me out with my camera on the shiny spout! I was hoping the shower would be an easy fix, but it appears that will require a plumber so that will have to wait as will the sink drain which requires dismantling the entire pedestal sink.

Oh, and I picked up this little hobnail milk glass jar in a little antique store in Delaware over the summer. Its the perfect place for me to leave my jewelry at night.

I've been meaning to do some projects, but I just feel like hibernating with this cold weather. My girls have been keeping me busy and when they nap, I'm more inclined to curl up under a warm blanket and read a book or take a nap myself rather than pull out paint and tools. I have a whole year to do these things, right?

Flowers and a Sewing Machine

Years ago my dad (the retired sanitation worker) found one of those old Singer sewing machines you see everywhere but the mechanism was missing so he just added a piece of wood to the top. He gave it to me at some point. When I moved to my house, I painted the top black and have used it as an entry table ever since. Its rusted over the years so it needs a new coat of paint this spring.

I placed a milk glass lamp that was a Christmas gift on top. I love the switch on the lamp of all things. Reminds me of a skeleton key and is so easy to turn compared to the boring turning knob-type switches on some lamps.

I was in the grocery store today and planned to pick up bunches of white carnations to replace the red carnations I've had since before Christmas that are only now fading. As I stood there looking at the case of flowers, I picked up spray roses instead. I did my own flowers for my wedding and made some enormous arrangements with white spray roses that had hints of green. I ordered way too many flowers so that's why the arrangements were so large, but they were beautiful.

So, there you have it. A little reminder of my spring wedding on this frigid January day.

Milk Glass Table Setting

On Monday, I received a book I ordered that has a ton of milkglass in it and information about the pieces. I buy what I like and I am super cheap so I know I'm not overspending, but I wanted more information about the history/brands, etc. I came across this ad with an entire tablesetting of milk glass.

I'm off to a good start with my little collection of dishes, but I had to wonder - How long would it take to have enough for an entire table like that? A lifetime of treasure-hunting, I'm sure.

And, my poor mom. She is in Vermont with my dad painting their little red cabin white with yellow trim after seeing a house in Lewes, DE with those colors. It was such a fun combination that you don't see often. I can't wait to see it! She will be home for one day before a business trip to Florida and I plan to stalk her to go look for some milk glass that I passed up on my last trip there.

More from my Weekend ...

When I go to thrift stores or antique stores, I'm always on the prowl for milk glass. I really like anything with a lace edge or hobnails. My mom and I found a couple of great new stores. My most exciting find was this cake plate. I've seen these all over online, but by the time you'd pay for shipping, it wasn't such a thrifty find anymore. Its a perfect match for my cloche. I've always wanted this because it matches ...

... my other lace edge dishes. Now, I have a perfect set for dessert!

More little pretties - I also found these two pieces with lace edges ...

... this hobnail dish ...

... these custard cups ...

... and one of my favorites were these shell dishes.

There was so much more, but I really have to restrain myself and only buy what I REALLY like and remember that I don't want to spend more than a few dollars. For me, finding a bargain is the exciting part. I was totally drooling over an incredible milk glass pedestal punch bowl with 24 glasses, but it was more than I wanted to spend especially because I already have a punch bowl! They are having a sale and I may ask my mom to go back and see if its still there. If not, it wasn't meant to be and I'll be okay with it.

It definitely took some rearranging to get all of these new things put away. I'm running out of space!

Speaking of little pretties, here are my girls enjoying their weekend ...

The Wild One was cautious at first ...

... but it didn't take long before she was lovin' the waves!

Happy girl wanted no part of the water and decide to do what she does best. Eat.

Daddy with his Happy Girl ...

And, look! A dolphin!

I'm just waiting for the 'rents to return from their Vermont cabin so that I can go back for more beach fun with the girls. We all had a great time!
