Going Green

I'm haven't done much decorating since Christmas but now I'm putting away, straightening up and preparing for spring.  Rather than the blue and white I usually focus on, I'm adding a few green accents.

My dining room is just about finished.  Nothing new here.  I just used a few things I already had and I moved the botanical pictures from the living room.

The jars are eggs from previous Easters and one jar is some glass vase fillers I had on hand.
I purchased these green curtains last year and I'm glad I'm finally able to put them up.

I'm glad to have one room done because I have so much more to do.  After getting a paint sample, I settled on a paint color for my living room - Behr- Silver Drop.  It's a very pale grey that illuminates the room and flowes with the adjoining dining room.  I'm looking forward to finishing it.

Oh, and I also just got my Wisteria cloches and I'm thrilled with them but they are currently in my living room so I'll share them when I finish painting.

White Christmas Dining Room

I want to have a pretty table on Christmas Eve and thought I'd figure out what to do.  Last year, I did red accents, but this year, its all white and silver.

I changed things from the rustic look of fall ...

... to silver and white for the holidays.

I used some lace placemats my grandmother gave me, and added chargers I picked up at Michaels to thrift store dishes,$1 store dishcloths for napkins and my flea market jewelry.

My Christmas apron is back along with another flea market pin.

I left the sideboard somewhat simple.

Other than the apron and stacked milk glass on the table which has a few ornaments, there is nothing else that says Christmas so this will carry me through winter.

Do you decorate your dining room for the holidays?

Chalk Board Tray

I picked up this tray about a year ago at a thrift store and other than painting it from its originial natural wood color to white hadn't done anything with it.

Chalkboard paint on trays is nothing new so I'm not sure why it didn't occur to me.

I had hoped to line it with vintage wallpaper, but unlike other people out there who manage to find the stuff, I wasn't quite so lucky.  This was a fun alternative.

Don't laugh at my artwork.  I never said I was an artist!

Cozy Dining

Hello all!  I know I've been MIA (again) but I've barely had a minute to spare.  This fall, I decided to veer from my usual blue and white and try some color but I have to admit that I'm already starting to miss it.  I'll probably carry it through Thanksgiving, but you can be sure that I will be back to light and bright this Christmas.  Speaking of Christmas, I know I can't be the only one getting Holiday magazines let alone seeing stores filled with holiday decor.  I want to say, "Wait!  I'm not even ready for Halloween yet and its THIS Sunday!"

Anyway, I came across the idea below and loved it.  I've seen blankets used before for tablecloths, but its usually more colorful, and often a quilt.  Love the textured but cozy white blanket.

(BHG)

Last but not least, I have to admit that one reason I haven't been a very good blogger lately is because this past summer I was lucky enough to be chosen for a student performance company at my belly dance studio and I'm preparing for a December belly dance show so I have busy evenings several nights a week.  However, thanks to belly dance, there's some goodness coming up that I think everyone is going to love.  Intrigued?  Stay tuned.

Blue Break

My obsession with blue is well known, but for fall, I was hoping for a change of pace in my dining room.  Last year, I stayed with the pale color palette but this year I wanted to try something different.  In July when I was vacationing in New England, I purchased a couple of aprons.  I just took off the first apron I bought and replaced it with this one which I intended for fall.  This was the starting point.

I stared at it for a couple of days before deciding that I wanted orange curtains.  I had to think about it because I wondered how orange would work with blue walls but a simple google search demonstrated that this color combination does exist and I actually like it.

Out went the green apples on the buffet and in came the pinecone filled cloche and fall hydrangeas which actually have a reddish hue up close.

I picked up the tablecloth from a vintage linen booth at the D.C. Big Flea over the weekend.  Most of the booth was comprised of the usual white and pastel linens which I love, but I found this one at the bottom of a pile and couldn't leave it behind.  I suspect its not vintage, but the colors were exactly what I wanted and I like the rustic quality of it.  The beeswax candles came from a vendor at another booth.

I'm working on my hallway and finally hung my lanterns.  They look beautiful!  I'm doing a little paint touch-up but I'll be sharing that next along with more flea market finds.

Delicious Doilies

Last week, I received the most generous gift from a reader ~ Judy from Texas.  Upon receiving them, I immediately put them on my dining room table.  I love them!

She said that years ago she was given 3 embroidered doilies as a gift from a neighbor. She was told that the neighbor's grandmother in India made them.

They're really perfect with the yellow of my living room, blue of the dining room and bits of green in the kitchen and dining room. I also realized how great purple accents might look in my dining room thanks to these doilies.

Before sending these, she told me not to get too excited because they were nothing special.  Well, Judy, they're special to me and I love them.  Thank you so much for the beautiful gift!

New Apron from New England

Greetings from the absent blogger!  ;-)

We just returned from a trip to New England and I thought I'd share a little something I came across.  When we were traveling around Vermont we passed through a town called St. Johnsbury and I was beyond excited to pass an apron store.  I returned the next day (sans kids) and saw so many pretty ones.  It was so hard to choose!  Here's one I picked up ...

Its a magnolia print with a botanical print on the pockets and tie.  I couldn't resist the matching tea cozy.

I've been wanting a tea cozy for a while but nothing jumped out at me.  I really love things that match (who doesn't?) so not only did I get a cute apron, but I also got the tea cozy.

This actually was my second selection that I chose just as I was leaving.  My first purchase was another that you'll have to tune back in for in the fall.

I'm off now to do more of this ...

(That's me at my incredibly fun show in June.)

Have a great week!

Edit - I forgot to add a link to where I purchased the aprons.  Its called Vermont Apron Company and they have a store online but the brick and mortar store was so much more fun to visit and there was a lot more available there.

London Calling

At Christmas my brother and I decided to surprise our parents with a trip to London and Scotland since this October marks their 40th anniversary.  They decided to take their trip in May and they just returned last week.  They brought me some new threads for Grace!

The apron has the classic double-decker bus on the front ...

... Big Ben on one side ...

... and Parliament on the other side.

I was trying to think of something British that we celebrate here in the U.S. during which I could display this but can't think of anything so I'm just going to leave it on now.
My parents had such a great time and have so many photos of their travels.  They very narrowly escaped London for a flight to Edinburgh after the infamous ash cloud grounded flights again.  My favorite places they visited were the gardens in Kensington Palace and Loch Ness.  My parents took a cruise of Loch Ness and their pictures really showed how beautiful it is there.  My dad said that he never thought he'd see where Nessie lived in his lifetime.  They had a great time and they deserved it.  I'm pretty happy with my apron too!

I'm having guests ...

Yesterday, I got a call and was reminded that my mom and grandparents were coming over today. I had completely forgotten. Panic. Luckily between yesterday and today, I've managed to finish painting my kitchen, cleaning up, planning dinner, making appetizers, clearing out some stuff for donation and planting my pansies outside. Nothing like the unexpected to light a fire under me.

I also set my table for dinner ... (I need to add one more place setting but even my little ones have a spot with their plastic dishes and pink napkins on the far side of the table.)

The napkins came from a little shop in DE and they're perfect for today. Its supposed to be in the 70s and I'm absolutely thrilled!

V-Day Diningroom

I've added some red to my dining room in anticipation of Valentine's Day. I changed the snowflakes on the branches to glittered hearts.
This apron is actually 2 aprons. The bottom is an adult apron and the top is a child apron. I got them both at Target last year for $2.50 each.

More red to come ...

My Favorite Redo of 2009

I posted this below but I'm posting it for the Room Re-do party at The Lettered Cottage because I have to pick a favorite. Picking one isn't easy, but I have to go with my dining room ... maybe because it was so much work refinishing that table.

What did you get for Christmas?

Now that all the gifts are unwrapped and the wrapping paper cleaned up, I was able to make use of one of my gifts today. Grace got a new Christmas apron.

It has pretty holly embroidery on it.

Its too bad Christmas is over and I'll have to go back to the other one so soon. At least I'll have it for next year.

I'd love to get '50s swing dress for under the aprons. Maybe I'll get lucky at a flea market in the New Year.

I got a few other things I'll share this week, but the best gift was the one I gave that I posted about yesterday. So, what was your favorite gift?

Home Sweet Home

The holiday weekend was fantastic, but there's nothing like being home. Even my girls seem just so happy to be home.

For the first time, both my girls were taking naps away from home. This gave me an opportunity to go out with Mr. T to do a little treasure hunting at a couple of my favorite junk stores. A few things I picked up ...

The two silver plated trivets ($3 each) and the silver plated tray ($5 new in box). The little tree was from the dollar store and the taper candle holders were previous thrift store acquisitions.

Its hard to see, but the trivets have a monogram that I think is an "M" which is fine for me, but I'll consider it a "W" since that's our family name.

The tray, though brand new, was completely tarnished. I polished it some, but not completely. The tarnish is interesting. Its actually irridescent.

Faux-mercury glass votive holders ($.50 each).

I believe this is a teapot, but I'm going to use it for water. ($3.50)

And, this silver plated butter knife ($1). I like how it stands on its side ...

... but the handle is flat so you can see the pretty detail.

I picked up a few other things that I'll try to post later on in the week.

Dining Room Table

I've had a couple of requests for instructions on how I refinished my dining room table to match my sideboard. I figured that I'd post what I did for anyone interested.

This is long, but I'm trying to be thorough. It was a bit of a process.

My table was a honey stained pine.

First, I concentrated on the chairs. I removed the seats by unscrewing them from beneath. I had previously recovered them by just stapling the striped fabric over what was there.

Then, I lightly sanded and spray painted them - 1 coat of spray primer, 2 coats of ivory spray paint. I suppose you could just use regular paint, but I wanted to save a little time.

IMPORTANT: If you use spray paint, wear a mask!! Its a lot of spray paint for this amount of furniture and it didn't take me long to realize that I REALLY needed a mask.

Once it was dry, I used a rag to apply some stain rubbing it on and playing with texture to match my sideboard. The finish was a little dark so once the stain dried, I distressed it with sandpaper. Everyone has their preference, but I liked gel stain for this because it dries much slower so you have more time to play with the finish. I found that traditional stain dried too fast for me here. I used the same method above with the legs of the table. I didn't bother covering the top of the table because I knew I was sanding it down to bare wood so it didn't matter if I got a little paint on the top.

Once I finished with the legs of the table, I moved on to the top which was the most work by far. I purchased an orbital sander (Rigid 5in. Orbit Sander) which made the stripping so much easier. I have a few pieces of furniture that I wanted to refinish, so the sander was worth it. I think it took me an hour at most to do the whole table top with the sander. Once the stripping was done, I sanded again with a finer grit. After that, I cleaned the top of all the dust with a wet cloth. There was a lot of dust so just beware.

The staining ... A few things you'll need. Get gloves and make sure they're the type you can use with stain. The first ones I bought were eaten through by the stain. This will save you from having to clean your hands with mineral spirits. Second, you'll need lots of rags. If you don't have them (like old t-shirts), you can buy them at any hardware store in the paint area. Third, a good brush. I like the Purdy brand at Home Depot and for this I bought a 2.5" brush specifically for oil paint. Don't buy a cheap brush or you'll have bristles falling out all over the place. Finally, mineral spirits for the clean up. We use an old pickle jar with a small amount of mineral spirits to dip the brush in before we wash the brushes with soap and water.

I started with a gel stain and I have to say, I hated it. Applying it was no problem, but wiping it off after application was such a mess! I used so many rags. Then, it took 8 hours to dry. Once it was dry, I decided that the color was light so I decided to do a second coat, but I used traditional stain. That was MUCH easier to wipe off and only took 4 hours to dry. I used a Walnut color.

Finally, polyurethane. I did 1 coat, lightly sanded by hand, wiped the dust and did a second coat. I may do a third coat so that its very smooth.

It really wasn't as much work as it sounds. Most of the time I was waiting for things to dry. I did most of the work in the 2 hours my girls were napping each day and maybe another hour in the evening when my husband came home from work. It took about 5 days.

One more thing ... My parents recently refinished their table as well. Their table seemed to be a softer pine. The top had quite a lot of scratches and gouging. If you're refinishing a table that is anywhere close to how thiers was, it is worth considering the additional time it will take to sand out the damage. It might be better to just paint the top instead because sanding all of the scratches out will be tough, but it all depends on how much time you want to spend on it. Their table looks great too!
