Outdoors and Orchids

A couple of weeks ago, I went to my parents house and got to see my dad's latest collection of plants. He'd purchased a bunch of orchids and I was immediately jealous. While I do pretty well with outdoor plants usually, indoor plants pretty much just come to my house to die. However, my dad informed me that all orchids need are a few ice cubes each week. Even I can manage that. I picked up 3 miniatures and dropped them into a tin from the Target $1 section.

Like most of the East coast, we've had some heavy rain the past few days and these have brightened up my kitchen window. I also happened to stop by Life in the Fun Lane and while the focus of the post was Holly's beautiful furniture, I fell in love with how she potted her orchids. I would love to have orchids potted like that on my coffee table, but I'm afraid the little fingers in this house are still a little too curious.

I love rain this time of year in particular. Heavy rain in spring makes everything so much greener once everything starts growing. Before the rain started, my crocuses were just starting to come up ...

... my Camellias were just beginning to bloom ...

... and I was just getting ready to pot a flat of pansies.
The rain interrupted my plans to go outside which is probably a good thing because I'm still in the middle of painting the kitchen. I decided on a color and I'm really happy with it, but I made a silly mistake and also needed to do some patching so its taking a little longer than planned but I will be done in a couple of days. For now, I'll leave you guessing on what I chose.

  5. Really pretty flowers and love those orchids. I've got a tin planter that is very similar to yours and now thanks to your inspiration I now know what to use it for.

  9. I was going through your posts and saw that you were looking for a green color for your kitchen so I thought I would tell you about "Peony" by Ralph Lauren, I had it in my dining and living rm for a couple of yrs and I believe that may be the longest that any color ever lasted in my house, Lol!! I still love it and have debated on repainting it that color, I have pic's on my blog with that color on my walls if you would like to look (;
