Slipcovers and secretaries

The other day, I was looking for white chair slipcovers for my dining room. In my search I ended up coming across this beautiful home on the Country Living website. These are nothing like I was looking for but look at this monogrammed slipcover ...

And this one ...

So pretty! The living room is gorgeous too ...

But what really caught my eye was the secretary in this dining room.

You see, I have a secretary of my own that belonged to my great-grandmother that isn't in the best shape and I've been planning on painting it. (This is now in my living room and a little less messy!)

I actually saw the exact secretary I have painted and embellished in Romantic Homes a few months ago.

But, I've been thinking lately, does it have to be white? I was actually thinking of doing something distressed like the blue secretery, or maybe green instead. Its going to go in my living room where I have blue, green and white. Decisions, decisions ... What color would you pick? Maybe another color?

P.S. Mr T wasn't mad about the kitchen yesterday. I hadn't finished when he got home, but I was pretty close. He actually liked the way it looked! To Marty who commented about the island color. THANK YOU! I stood there yesterday thinking that the island color was exactly what I wanted and I wished I could pick it up and take it for color matching. Why did it never occur to me to just take a drawer??? Now, I'll just have to figure out how to remove the drawer!

  1. I think I like the secretary painted more than when it is stained. I am not a decorator, is there a rule of percentage of main color, accents and not more than 3 colors? I think the secretary will be a focal point in the room so maybe paint it your main color. Please post some pics when you decide what color. Good luck. Sandi

  2. Oh I love the secretary. I think it would be gorgeous any of the colors. It is such a pretty piece and so versatile. I'm glad the kitchen is coming along. Great job. Hugs, Marty

  3. Ok, now here I go. Love the photo of the blue secretary, but be sure to get just the right 2 tones of blue. Green is always a wonderful color as well... Both are great choices. I always love the combination of black and cream as well. May sound goofy, but the two go well together. Or perhaps a combo of cream and blue or cream and green? Have fun with it....Love Tiina...

  4. This is my first visit to your blog and it's beautiful - I'm your newest follower! I love those slipcovers. Wish I had something to put them on. Maybe it's because that's my initial and it's always a little exciting when you see something exactly as you would order it!

I saw your comment on Cindy's giveaway blog about getting rid of your Fiestaware. Oh, please don't do that, just store it until you're sure. As each color retires it becomes collectible. My sister collects Fiestaware and is always looking for retired colors.

BTW, I think your secretary would look great in green. I always consider green one of the neutral colors - it goes with anything. It's a beautiful piece. Can't wait to see what you decide!

  5. Hi Melanie! What a gorgeous piece of furniture! I was looking at your pretty kitchen (love the lighter color better too!) and saw what appeared to be a blue room to the right?? Sooo I think your idea of painting the secretary blue would be a great look! (even if the room really isn't blue!lol) Lots of work though so good luck with it!! Sincerely, Jeannette

  6. Welcome Robin!

I'm really undecided on the Fiestaware. I suppose I could hold on to it for a while. On the other hand, I'd like to pass it on to someone who would enjoy it more that I will. We'll see!

  7. Hi Jeanette!

The blue room on the right is my dining room. I have a lot of blue in my house now but I also have some green. I just moved an upholstered glider and ottoman that are green into the living room.

Someone suggested to me painting the outside white and the inside blue. I love the way that looks and as much as I'd love to do blue, I might go with green to accent the chair. I have other paint projects to finish so I have some time to decide.

    Thanks for the input!
